This is one single, big page. I won't translate everything - diary, novel and all.
This page has three sections: First, there's a contact section, where there's info
on how to get in touch with me and the other wacky norwegians. Then, there's an updates
section where there's brief info on our whereabouts and plans. On the bottom there's a section with
maps. Remember that the images page is also in english.
Contact
While I'm in Central America there's two ways to contact me. Note that you also find e-mail-addresses for the others
further down.
E-mail: Send e-mail to fahr at earthling.net.
Phone: Phone is out. It was just too expensive to check my messages from down here.
ICQ: I'm on ICQ #1979929, and I use ICQ whenever I'm in an internet
café. You can
- see if I'm online. Check the upper right.
- search me up with ICQ, add me to your contact list and/or send me a message. Note: I do not bother to rebuild my entire
contact list on each new computer, so even if you see me online, I probably can't see you. Feel free to contact me.
Without ICQ:
- go to my ICQ-page, where you can send messages and different stuff.
- send e-mail straight to my ICQ (EmailExpress): 1979929@pager.icq.com. Note that this
is limited to 450 characters!
- send a message from here. Note that this is also limited to 450 characters!
The others...
...have their own e-mail-addresses, of course. They check them every now and then, and they are as follows:
Updates
Going home! My plane takes off in six hours. Bye all!
I am in San Cristóbal again, after visiting Todos Santos. Tonight,
I'm going to Oaxaca and then to Zipolite. From there it's Mexico, D.F. and then home!
Left Atitlán yesterday, went via Chichicastengano's famous market
to Xela. Tomorrow I'll leave Xela for Huehuetenango, stop by in Todos Santos Cuchumatán, and then head back to Mexico.
We celebrated christmas outside Panajachel. We're now in San Pedro for
the New Year.
And there it was! I walked out of the internet cafe and bumped right
into Kenneth! We're staying around the lake somewhere for christmas, new year is still unclear.
Leaving the lake at last! I've been a week in San Lucas Tolimán,
sister town to my hometown in Norway. My next move is not clear yet - there may be another update soon.
Long time no update! I've been studying spansih in San Pedro, and now I'm
still by the lake, in La Iguana Perdida, by the tiny village Santa Cruz la Laguna. I'll be hanging around here a few days more.
...and a nice week it was! I enjoyed it a lot. And there's heaps of new
pictures! I am now in Panajachel, going to San Pedro tomorrow. I'll be here around Lago de
Atitlán for a week or two.
I got in touch with Kenneth, on the working/volunteer farm Finca Santa
Ínes outside Guatemala City. I'm going there myself today, staying for a week or so. We can be reached at phone 634 8145.
Now I'm in Antigua, after four days on the Finca. Sorta unclear plans,
but I'll be here for at least a few days. Then it may be Lago de Atitlán or perhaps straight to language school in Xela.
New break. But now I'm in Flores as planned, Tikal was
just amazing. Wait for the pictures. Today I go to Finca Ixobel outside Poptún, then to Rio Dulce/Lívingston
Long since last of these updates. I've been in
and around San Cristóbal, and have enjoyed myself. Tomorrow I'm going with Israelis Dan, Liat and
Michal to Palenque. From there I'll maybe try and make my way into EZLN-country: The Lacandon jungle, and
then to Flores/Tikal, Guatemala. Then I'll perhaps go straight south to Guatemala City.
By the way, I also added some more EZLN-stuff:
- A brief explanation of what EZLN is. Compulsory for anyone who feels totally lost.
- At last: EZLN's declaration of 1993, when the armed uprising started.
- For information about events since 1994: LADB, Latin America Data Base, has a good news service.
Click here to list all messages concerning Chiapas or EZLN, published since 1994.
To get more EZLN- and Chiapas-related background material, see below.
Not much to say. We're enjoying San Cristóbal
to the full. The Hotel California-feeling is sneaking up on me; "...you can check out any time you like, but
you can never leave...". I like this town so much, I'll be here a while before I go on. There's also a few
things I'm going to do and see around San Cristóbal first. Then I'll probably go to Palenque and from
there to Guatemala. Hmmmm... and anyone who doesn't know what the EZLN is or what happened new year's eve 1993,
should check this out, at least the first two articles:
And there was much rejoicing! I got to San
Cristóbal yesterday, and wrote mail to Anne, told her that I was in town, and where to meet me.
She got it, but couldn't find the restaurant, even if I had given specific directions... and she's the
one who's supposed to know these premises. So here I was again, hope fading, to see if they'd replied,
and there they walked in, Anne and Lillian. We agreed to split up more often - it was so hilarious to
rejunite.
About the others: Kenneth came and met the girls in Tulum, together with some of the Israelis we met in Isla Mujeres.
They went to Guatemala, Kenneth went with them, and Lillian joined in. Anne and Linda will be going
to Michoacán, west of Mexico City, with some young Mexicans they met in Tulum. I'll head over to Flores
and Tical in Guatemala, after having explored Chiapas thoroughly.
Now I'm in Merrida, and I've been to Chichén
Itzá and Uxmal. This evening I'm taking a night bus straight to San Cristóbal de Las Casas.
There I'll stay for a while and explore Chiapas. Heard that from Kenneth that he and Lillian are in Guatemala,
while Anne and Linda apparently are on their way to San Cristóbal.
New deal again: I thought I had enough sun and
sand. I am now in Valladolid, so plans from Oct.5. are still on. Kenneth was in Playa del Carmen when
I heard from him. He was taking a day trip thursday to look for the girls Tulum. Anne wrote a brief and
vague mail wednesday, about leaving Tulum friday and "hitch-hiking to northern Mexico".
New deal: Me and Kenneth are going now to Tulum
to look for the girls. I hope we find them.
The first english page. For now, I (Gaute) am in
Isla Mujeres, and so is Kenneth. The girls left for Tulum on saturday. I believe they're still there.
Kenneth is leaving to go straight to San Cristóbal de Las Casas today, with a very nice swedish girl,
Susann. My plans are slightly blurred, but I'll go today or tomorrow to Cancun to my friend Emilio. From
there I'll go either to Tulum to look for the girls, or I'll maybe go Cancun - Valladolid - Chichén Itzá -
Merrida - Uxmal - San Cristóbal. We'll see. I hope we could all be rejoined there, at the latest.
Maps
Here's a few good maps for those who really wonder where things are. Here's
a overview of Mexico, with my route drawn
in and a "zoom-function". Here's a detailed map of Yucatán and Chiapas,
with and without
extra info. More detailed maps will come, of course. The overview
is here with no drawn in nonsense, and also a huge, detailed map over
all of Mexico.
